This was a historical election: Now let us move on

I know Imran Khan’s fans are disappointed; as one of them I toally understand their pain. This was a good election and the results are also a clear expression of Pakistan’s digital divide: there is not much twittering or Facebooking going on in our villages and if you are winning on Twitter, it does not mean you are also winning in the dusty streets of Pakistani villages where Imran, Nawaz sharif and others show up only around election time.
Let us move on: this is a victory against those who have previously conquered their own nation at least four times in recent history.

Pakistan Embassy in US: No Instructions from Pakistan Election Commission on Expat Voting Yet!

Upon inquiry, Mr. Ahmed Nadeem Sadiq Hotiana, the Press Attache and Media Spokeman of the Embassy of Pakistan in DC, said that the embassy has not yet received any instructions from the election commission. Mr Hotiana also pointed out that the last part of the presidential ordinance  requires the embassy to work “as per the instructions” from the election commission.

Eight Countries Allow Pakistani Expats  to Vote in May 11 elections

Several countries including Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Australia and the United States have agreed to allow Pakistani citizens living in their territories to cast their votes at designated polling stations.

However, the Pakistani election commission, despite the issuance of an emergency presidential ordinance, has declared that it is impossible for them to make the necessary arrangements to include overseas Pakistanis in this election. Our question is simply this:

Yes, the ordinance was passed only two days before elections, but could they have not prepared for this in advance?

Militants threaten Pakistan elections

From Press TV

Pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan have threatened to disrupt the upcoming elections in the country, amid recent deadly bombings ahead of the polls. The militant group issued a statement on Thursday calling for bombings and attacks in several parts of Pakistan to undermine the elections.

The attacks are aimed at disrupting “the system of infidels” in Pakistan, Reuters quoted the statement on Thursday.

If overseas Pakistanis are given right to vote, i believe we may see more fruitful elections as most of the over seas Pakistanis are much educated, more broad minded and intellectual and let me say, its not wrong to call them a cream of the country. Such people may make a wiser decision and can contribute for a better selection of govt. in the country. I hope govt. may make some emergency arrangements to allow Pakistanis to vote from every country around the globe.

This is nice, but I also believe that Pakistanis living within Pakistan are more important to this process as they are the only ones dealing with the every day realities of life within Pakistan.

I am a Pakistani living in Toronto, my family was rooting for the P.T.I. and much of my family and friends were very. Many people were very disappointed, especially as this was the first time that much of my family in Pakistan actually voted for the first times in their lives. However, we should just stay positive. With such a high voting turn out at least we now know that Pakistanis are willing to take action. this is the first step in change,

People can use touch phones & ATM so there should be no problem in automated polls… there should be ‘multiple vote’ & ‘no vote’ options on the ballot interface so that true sentiments are reflected in the polls… President-PM-Governor-CM should be elected through popular vote, only Senate Chairman-Parliament Speakers & Ministers should be selected through electoral votes!… Federal & Provincial Secretaries should be technocrats and every ministry should have a research & quality improvement department; complaints should be launched via ministry official website and the status of complaints should be made public on real-time basis… state machinery should be right-sized in line with tax-to-GDP ratio… energy policy board should be formed under the umbrella of which portfolios of Water & Power; Petroleum & Natural Resources; Alternative Energy Board & PPIB should be placed… regulatory authorities should be merged into the ministries… Judicial; Revenue & Security departments should be fully automated… WE NEED TO PUT OUR HOUSE IN ORDER FIRST!

Today at a grocery shop I congratulated the Pathan owner for giving mandate to a Niazi… he said “let’s see how it turns out…” I reminded him that apart from Imran, mostly people elected in KPK Assembly are Pathans so there is no issue of representation & diversification… People of South Punjab & Mianwali radiate all the colors of Pakistan, if you know what I mean!… this is where the ‘New Pakistan’ can be found…
